ALLIANCE, Ohio (April 27) -- The Thiel College Baseball team dropped a non-conference matchup with D3baseball.com No. 23 University of Mount Union 12-2 Sunday afternoon at Rafeld-Rogers Field.
The Tomcats fall to 13-23 on the year while the Purple Raiders rise to 25-8.
Thiel jumped on the board in the first as
Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) brought in
Colton Brightwell (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Down 5-1 in the sixth, the Tomcats had the tying run on deck as
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) walked and
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) singled, but the Blue and Gold only pushed across 1 run to trim the deficit to 3. The home side went on to plate 4 in the bottom of the sixth and 3 more in the seventh to spell the 12-2 seven-inning final.
Brightwell had a pair of hits and scored a run while Cackowski had a hit and a RBI. Jacobs logged a hit, scored once and drew a walk. Bintrim finished with a hit and a walk.
Joey Schimizzi (Willowick, Ohio/Willoughby South) smacked a pair of hits on the day.
Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) got the start and retired the first six batters of the game before surrendering a pair of runs in the third. Mount Union tacked on 3 more in the fourth to pull ahead 5-1. Ickes K'd two in the outing.
Charlie Luedtke (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) worked two innings while
Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) had two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of relief.
The Tomcats will take on Hiram in a road non-conference game Wednesdat 2 p.m. before hosting Penn State Shenango Thursday at 4:30. Both matchups are single nine-innning affairs. Thiel will conclude the regular season Saturday in a home 1 p.m. PAC showdown with Waynesburg.
