Baseball downed by potent Washington offense

FT. PIERCE, Fla. (March 15) -- The Thiel College Baseball team dropped its Florida finale to Washington College (Md.) 14-4 Saturday afternoon at Lawnwood Baseball Complex.

The Tomcats drop to 2-8 and conclude the trip 2-6 while the Shoremen rise to 11-4.

Washington took advantage of a pair of Thiel errors to go ahead 1-0 in the first. Thiel loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame and were able to scrape away 1 to even the contest. After the Shoremen put a 6-spot on the board to lead 7-1 in the second, Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) got the Tomcats back in the contest with a 2-run double to make it 7-3.

Morrison finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and runs each. Morrison concluded the trip on a six-game hitting streak.

Washington plated 3 in the third and 4 in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Thiel added its final run on a Max Bihler (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) fielders choice in the fifth to spell the 14-4 final.

Bihler was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs on the day. Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) notched two hits from the DH spot to stretch his hitting streak to four while Fletcher Hindman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and JT Gerle (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) each produced a run and a hit.

Dillon Belknap (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) worked 2.2 innings of relief and struck out a career-high five batters. Brady Rzodkiewicz (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) got the start and took the loss, falling to 0-1.

The Tomcats clubbed 11 hits but were out-swatted as the Shoremen had 16.

Baseball returns to action Wednesday at 3 p.m. for a single-game tilt at non-conference foe La Roche College.
