ALLIANCE, Ohio (Dec. 30) -- The Thiel College Women's Basketball team closed its non-conference slate of games with an 80-46 setback at Mount Union Tuesday evening from McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Tomcats dip to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) while the Purple Raiders rise to 10-3 (2-2 Ohio Athletic Conference).
The Tomcats got off to a good start as an
Emily Betsinger (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) 3-pointer kickstarted a 7-0 spurt that put the visitors ahead 7-3 in the opening 3 minutes. Betsinger had 5 of the 7 points while
Kayley Risser (Reynoldsville, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) added a layup. The home side answered with the next 9 before Thiel answered with 5 straight, the last of which came on an
Issy Green (Slippery Rock, Pa./Portersville Christian) 3-ball, to knot the contest at 12.
A Green free throw cut the deficit to 16-13 at the 3:44 mark of the first quarter before Mount Union notched the final 17 points off the quarter and the first 12 of the second to pull ahead 45-13 with 6:44 left in the half. The Blue and Gold outscored the Purple Raiders 24-23 in the second half to spell the 80-46 final.
Green finished with a team-leading 14 points along with a contest-high-tying four steals. Betsinger contributed 9 points while grabbing a game-most nine rebounds.
Risser tallied 8 points and snagging four boards to go with a pair of steals.
Kelsey Seddon (Cochranton, Pa./Lakeview) posted 7 points in 18 minutes off the bench.
The Tomcats finished 12-of-16 (75 percent) at the charity stripe.
Thiel is back in action next Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 5:30 p.m. for a PAC showdown with Allegheny on Maenpa Court.
