Lawler’s second straight game winning goal lifts Thiel over Heidelberg

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's lacrosse team defeated the Heidelberg Student Princes, 8-7, in double overtime Monday afternoon inside the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.

Heidelberg took an early lead with a goal just three minutes into the game. However, Thiel responded quickly through Chase Lawler (Etters, Pa./Red Land). Thiel reeled off six answered goals to take a 6-1 lead into the second quarter.

Heidelberg score the final three goals of the first half to cut the Thiel lead to 6-4 heading into halftime.

A Lawler goal early in the second half put the Tomcats up 7-4, but two goals from Heidelberg, up a man, cut the Tomcats lead to 7-6.

With three seconds left in regulation, Tyler Alexander tied the game at 7-7 and sent the game into overtime.

Both teams had a chance to win the game in overtime, but neither team found the back of the net.

With 1:13 left in the second overtime, Zach Melin (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) found Chase Lawler (Etters, Pa./Red Land) who found the back of the net for his second straight game winner.

Thiel was led by Lawler who recorded three goals and three assists. He also added eight ground balls and three caused turnovers. Melin recorded three goals and an assist, while Bennett Medyn (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra Macedon) recorded one goal and two assists. John Robbins (Jeannette, Pa./Penn-Trafford) also added a goal.

Defensively, Justin Mason (Alden, N.Y./Alden Central) caused three turnovers and picked up six ground balls. In net, Ethan Narby (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) recorded a career-best 17 saves in the win.

Heidelberg was led by Tyler Alexander who recorded two goals. Benjamin Evans recorded three goals, while Jacob Brickman recorded a goal and an assist.

In goal for Heidelberg, Wilson Runnette recorded 14 saves.

The Tomcats will hit the road on Wednesday when they travel to La Roche. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
