Comeback efforts falls short in Women's Volleyball home finale

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Nov. 6) -- The Thiel College women's volleyball team dropped its home regular season finale 3-1 to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC)-leading Allegheny Wednesday night on Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium.

The Tomcats fall to 17-7 overall and 5-4 in PAC play while the Gators move to 23-5 overall and 9-0 in conference play. The visitors took the match by set scores of 25-17, 25-15, 23-25 and 25-21.

The Gators, looking to finish a sweep, jumped to a 13-6 lead in set three, forcing a pair of early Timeouts from head coach Dylan Lasher. Trailing 16-10 in the set, the Tomcats got the momentum back with a 6-0 run that turned into a 10-1 spurt to hold a 20-17 lead. A Daisy Jenness (Pendleton, Ore./Pendleton) kill coupled with a Gators attacking error gave Thiel a 23-19 edge, but the visitors evened things at 23 with a 4-0 run. Erica Gregory (Clinton Township, Mich./Fraser) clinched the set with a pair of kills to get Thiel on the board.

The Blue and Gold carried the momentum into set four and held leads of 6-2 and 10-7. The Gators climbed back into the set and ultimately took a 16-14 lead before a Gregory and Kelly Peplowski (Hubbard, Ohio/Ursuline) block coupled with a pair of aces from Danielle Aulet (Lawrence, Kansas/Mineral Ridge) gave the home side a 17-16 advantage. A 3-0 Allegheny run made it 19-17 but Gregory answered with back-to-back kills to even set four at 19. The Gators ultimately closed the match on a 6-2 run to seal the set and the match.

Set one was played fairly evenly as the Gators held a slim 16-15 lead at the midway point. The visitors pulled away though with a late 7-0 run to lead 23-15 and took the set 25-17.

Thiel held a slim 11-10 lead in set two on an Arin DeLattre (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) kill, but the visitors closed the frame with a 14-5 spurt to go ahead 2-0.

DeLattre posted a match-high and career-best-tying four solo blocks while also setting a new career best with 6.5 total blocks (4 BS, 5 BA). She added five kills in the loss.

Jenness had a team-leading 15 kills for her 19th double-digit kill performance on the year. The junior continues to lead the PAC in total kills (384) and kills per set (4.2). She also added three block assists.

Gregory finished with nine kills, 12 digs and a pair of block assists. Peplowski tallied four block assists.

As a team, the Tomcats had 13 total blocks (4 BS, 18 BA) to Allegehny's seven (2 BS, 10, BA).

Aulet posted a match-best 22 digs and a team-leading three aces. Carlie Reynolds (Grove City, Pa./Grove City Area) had a team-best 26 assists and two block assists.

The Tomcats conclude the regular season Saturday when they travel to Pittsburgh for a 5 p.m. matchup with Chatham. Going into play Saturday, Thiel, Westminster and Washington & Jefferson occupy the final three PAC Championship Tournament spots with identical 5-4 conference records. A Saturday Thiel victory would clinch a conference tournament berth for the Blue and Gold.
