Tomcats fall to Owls in season opener

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team opened its season with a non-conference loss to the Kenyon Owls, 10-3, Sunday afternoon in Florida.
 
Kenyon scored two runs in the first inning before Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) drove in Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) to cut the deficit to one in the second inning.
 
Kenyon would add two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) hit a two RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Kenyon lead to 4-3. However, the Tomcats would be held scoreless the remainder of the game.
 
Kenyon would tack on five more runs to close the game out.
 
Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) started the game on the mound and suffered the loss. He went 5.2 innings, giving up eight hits and two earned runs. He also struck out two and walked two batters. Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and Charlie Luedtke (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) both recorded one strikeout a piece.
 
Prunty led the Tomcats, going 2-2 including one run batted in (RBI). Cackowski recorded on hit and two RBIs, while Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) recorded two hits. Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) and Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) each recorded a hit.
 
Kenyon was led by Edwin Groff who had two hits and drove in three runs. Nate Rosen tallied three hits and was walked twice.
 
Kenyon's Theo Canning earned the win, throwing five innings and struck out four. Sam Richards pitched three innings in relief and struck out five.
 
The Tomcats will look to bounce back tomorrow when they take on the Wheaton Thunder. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
