PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team went on the road and defeated the La Roche Redhawks in a non-conference game, 8-2, Wednesday afternoon.
The Tomcats took an early 4-0 lead, which would be too much for the Redhawks to overcome.
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) started the game off with a 2 RBI double to left field. Then
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) drove in two runs after doubling to right field.
Jacobs added to the lead in the fifth inning after he doubled to left field, scoring
Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe), before La Roche would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Tomcats added one run in the eighth, and two in the ninth before the Redhawks scored in the bottom of the ninth to round out the scoring.
Thiel was led by
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union), who went 2-for-5 and recorded three RBI's.
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) also went 2-for-5, recording two RBI's.
Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) went 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Aidan Ochs (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Veron) and
Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) each recorded two hits and drove in one run a piece.
Freshman
Ian Mills (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) got the start on the mound for the Tomcats, pitching six innings, striking out seven and only giving up one run. He also walked three batters.
Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and
Cole Sherwin (Karns City, Pa./Karns City) pitched in relief, combining to strike out three with zero walks.
La Roche was led by Nathan Stutz who went 2-for-4 and drove in the Redhawks only earned run. Seven other Redhawks collected hits.
Jamison Rhoades started for the Redhawks, pitching 0.2 innings, giving up three hits, four runs and walked four batters. Dylan Chan and Chris Tarquinio pitched in relief, combining for two strikeouts and four runs.
The Tomcats return to Tomcat Park on Saturday as they open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play against Chatham. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with the second game scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
