LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Thiel College softball team went 1-1 Thursday during play in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
Lauren Bonner (Hermitage, Pa./Reynolds) threw a two-hitter in Thiel's second game of the day, a 9-0 win over the Norwich Cadets in five innings.
Already leading 1-0, the Tomcats plated three runs in the second inning when
Kylee Yothers (Indian Head, Pa./Connellsville Area) hit a bases-clearing double to center field. Yothers tacked on her fourth RBI of the game in the fourth inning on a single to right field.
Yothers went 2-for-4 against the Cadets with four RBIs.
Haylee Dyne (Spartansburg, Pa./Corry) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Mila Brdar (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport) led Thiel with three hits.
Bonner threw a complete game shutout. She struck out one batter without issuing a walk.
Thiel fell to the Wilkes Colonels in their first game of the day, 12-5.
The Tomcats held a 5-4 lead through three innings, but the rest of the game belonged to the Colonels who went on to score eight unanswered runs.
Abby Rottman (Hilliards, Pa./Moniteau) drove in Thiel's first run of the game on a single to center field in the first inning. Rottman recorded her second RBI of the game on a single to left field in the third inning.
Amber Wilkes (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township) also had an RBI in the third, one of four runs the Tomcats scored in the inning.
Rottman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored against Wilkes.
Kayla Roddy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and Yothers also had two hits apiece.
Roddy allowed just four earned runs. She struck out five batters and allowed one walk in six innings.
Lauren DeMarco earned the win in four innings of relief work. She allowed just two hits and struck out two batters.
Thiel is scheduled to play Clarks Summit at 9 a.m. and Gwynedd Mercy at 1 p.m. on Friday.
