GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel College celebrated the 50
th anniversary of the three-year unbeaten streak of the 1971 to 1973 women's basketball team and recognized the recent golden anniversary of the passage of the landmark federal civil rights law that prohibited sex-based discrimination in any school or other education program that receives federal funding at halftime of Saturday's game against the Allegheny Gators at Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Led by coach Linda Cooper, Thiel College's women's basketball team won 31 straight games between 1971 and 1973. Nicknamed the Tomkittens, all three teams were inducted into the Thiel College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997.
Members of the 1971, 1972 and 1973 teams participated in an alumni game Saturday morning, as well as pre- and post-game receptions. Members of the teams and the teams themselves were honored at halftime along with the passage of Title IX in 1972. T-shirts were also handed out to attendees at Saturday's game.
Emily Lauer scored a game-high 30 points and corralled eight rebounds to lead Allegheny to a 72-44 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over Thiel.
Giana Arnese (Carbondale, Pa./Carbondale) paced the Tomcats with a career-high 14 points.
Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Western) scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
The Tomcats will host the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets Monday. The PAC game will begin at 7 p.m.
