GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team swept the Franciscan Barons in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Sunday.
In game one, the Tomcats tied the game at four in the fifth inning. In the seventh and final frame the Barons took the lead and were one out away from the win.
Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) extended the game with a walk to bring up
Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale). Williams ended the game with a walk-off home run to give the Tomcats a 6-5 win.
Along with the walk-off home run, his fifth home run of the season, Williams also singled for a 2-for-4 game. Wentling reached base three times with two walks and a single, drove in a run, and scored two runs.
Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) doubled and recorded a run and an RBI.
Adam Walker (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) singled and walked and scored two runs.
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) knocked in a run.
On the mound,
Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) struck out eight and allowed one earned run in five innings in a no-decision.
Alex Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) earned the win, tossing two innings of one-run ball in relief.
After the first game, the Tomcats honored 11 seniors from the team on the field.
Game two featured a pitcher's duel until the Tomcats got on the board with a three-run seventh inning and a two-run eighth inning as they shut out the Barons, 5-0.
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) doubled and drove in two runs.
Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren) hit a two-run single and scored a run.
Dan Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) scored a run and recorded an RBI. Williams, Jacobs, and Walker each notched a hit and scored a run.
On the mound, seniors
Richard Crooks (Milan, Ohio/Edison),
Max Siguenza (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville), and
Will Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) pitched a combined shutout. Crooks allowed just two hits in four shutout innings with three strikeouts. Siguenza followed with three no-hit innings to earn the win. Brandsema closed out the game with two scoreless frames to earn his first career save.
The Tomcats concluded the season at 16-22 overall and 12-14 in the PAC to finish fifth in the conference.
