Tomcats sweep AMCC tri-match, earn fifth seed in Tournament

CRESSON, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team defeated both the Hilbert Hawks and the Mount Aloysius Mounties, 3-0, in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tri-match on Saturday.
 
In the first game against the Hilbert Hawks, the Tomcats swept 25-9, 25-5, 25-13. The Tomcats kept momentum into the final game of the tri-match, sweeping the Mount Aloysius Mounties, 25-9, 25-16, 25-8.
 
Against Hilbert, Jake Dies (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) led the Tomcats with five kills. Jacob Smeltzer (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led the team with three service aces and tallied five digs and two kills. Brandon Millias (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) notched 11 assists and two service aces. Evan Cessna (Kittanning, Pa./West Shamokin) led Thiel with six digs.
 
For Hilbert Chris Smith led the team with three kills.
 
Against the Mounties, David Gonzalez (El Paso, Texas/Eastwood) and Connor McInnis (Southington, Conn./Southington) finished with eight and six kills, respectively. Millias notched 16 assists and nine service aces. Millias' 32 aces this season is tied for the second-most for a Tomcats' player in a single season. Ricky Castillo (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) and Ethan Cooper (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) each recorded seven digs.
 
For the Mounties, Andrew Wlodarzyk and Tayshaun Johnson notched four kills apiece, while Benjamin Park led the team with 11 assists and four digs.
 
After the games, the AMCC also announced the men's volleyball tournament seeding and matchups. The fifth-seeded Tomcats will travel to Penn State Altoona to take on the fourth-seeded Lions on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to face the top-seeded Penn State Behrend on Friday.
