SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team was defeated in both games of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against the Grove City Wolverines at Slippery Rock University on Saturday.
In game one, the Wolverines won 12-2 thanks to a six-run fourth inning and three-run fifth inning. In game two, Grove City led 6-5 after three innings. The Wolverines added to take an 11-5 lead entering the seventh. The Tomcats began to claw back but would fall short as the Wolverines won 13-11.
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) tallied two doubles, a run, and an RBI in the first game.
Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley) drove Rago in and
Patrick Shirey (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) was driven in by Rago.
Richard Crooks (Milan, Ohio/Edison) was charged with the loss in 3.1 innings of work.
Nathan Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) tossed a shutout inning in relief.
In game two,
Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren) tallied a career-high four hits, including two doubles, and tied his career high with four RBIs. Rago and
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) each notched three hits and two runs scored.
Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) also had three hits with two RBIs and two runs.
Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley) drove in a run and scored two with two hits.
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) also notched two hits and an RBI.
Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) drove in two runs. Starter
Alex Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) was charged with the loss in two innings of work.
For the Wolverines, Tate Ostrowski pitched a complete game to earn the win in game one. Nico Rodriguez tallied seven RBIs between both games. Bubba Hamilton hit a three-run home run in game two.
The Tomcats will host the Westminster Titans in a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m.
