TIFFIN, Ohio – Freshman
Zach Melin (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) scored an unassisted goal with 2:01 remaining in double-overtime Saturday to lift the Thiel Tomcats to a 7-6 non-conference win on the road over the Heidelberg Student Princes.
Tied 3-3 at the end of the first quarter, Heidelberg went on to lead 5-3 at halftime. The Tomcats evened the score (5-5) in the third quarter on goals from
Bennett Medyn (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra Macedon) and
Chase Lawler (Etters, Pa./Red Land).
Heidelberg took a 6-5 lead with 8:47 remaining in the fourth quarter when David Weaver scored an unassisted goal. Lawler scored the equalizer for the Tomcats with 1:12 remaining in regulation, setting the stage for Melin's game-winner in double-overtime.
Medyn and Lawler scored three goals apiece. Melin scored the game-winning goal and assisted on Lawler's goal in the third quarter.
Thiel's
Alex Andreozzi (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls while
Steve Alcegaire (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) caused three turnovers.
Alex Bruder paced Heidelberg with two goals.
Jason Masciantonio (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) made 11 saves for Thiel. Cian Howery made 13 saves for Heidelberg.
Thiel (2-2) will face Muskingum on the road Saturday. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
