GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets Wednesday afternoon.
The Tomcats won the first game, 4-3, but fell in the second game, 16-6.
In game one, the Tomcats got four runs in the first three innings. The Tomcats led 4-0 until the seventh and final inning when the Yellow Jackets scored three runs. With the tying run on third and one out, closer
Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) slammed the door shut with two strikeouts to give the Tomcats a 4-3 win.
Wentling earned the save but also reached base twice with a run and an RBI.
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) and
Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley) each recorded a double and drove in a run.
Dan Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford),
Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale), and
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) each scored a run. On the mound, starter
Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) threw six innings of three-run ball (two earned) and struck out three with one walk.
For Waynesburg, Mike Bell was charged with the loss in six innings of four-run ball (three earned). Bryce Bedilion went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets took an early 7-2 lead. In the fifth inning the Tomcats began to claw back with four runs to bring the score to 7-6. However, the Tomcats were held scoreless the rest of the game and the Yellow Jackets tacked on nine more runs to win 16-6.
Bintrim hit a bases-clearing double and totaled a run and four RBIs. Williams scored a run and reached base four times with two doubles, a single, and a walk.
Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) reached base safely three times and scored twice. Rago added two hits and two runs.
On the mound, starter
Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) was charged with the loss in 2.2 innings of work.
Nathan Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) came in with runners on second and third in the ninth inning and got two outs to strand both.
For the Yellow Jackets, Alec Engelmore tossed 4.2 innings in relief and allowed just one hit and two walks. Todd Burner hit a three-run home run.
The Tomcats will be back on the home field again tomorrow against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes at 4 p.m.
