FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball was defeated, 5-10, by the Rockford Regents in the Gene Cusic Classic at the Player Development Complex on Friday.
Thiel got on the board first with a three-run second inning. Rockford answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second. In the fifth and sixth innings, the Regents scored three runs in both innings to gain an 8-3 advantage. The lead was too large for the Tomcats to overcome as they would fall, 5-10.
Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) tallied two runs and an RBI.
Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) knocked in two runs.
Dan Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) added two hits with a run.
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) also scored a run.
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) reached base three times with a hit and two walks.
Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) suffered the loss, tossing five innings of five-run ball with seven strikeouts.
Will Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) also struck out six in 2.2 innings pitched.
Charlie Luedtke (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) struck out the only batter he faced as the Tomcats struck out a total of 14 batters on the day.
For the Regents, Jared Herzog went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs, a home run and a stolen base. Kent Evans pitched six innings while allowing three runs and striking out seven to earn the win.
The Tomcats will take on the Rockford Regents again tomorrow at noon at the Player Development Complex.
