Presidents edge Tomcats, 10-9

Wightman, Quinn record hat tricks

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College women's lacrosse team was edged in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game on the road Wednesday by the Washington & Jefferson Presidents, 10-9.

The Presidents took a 3-0 lead less than eight minutes after the opening draw. Maddy Wightman (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) scored back-to-back goals late in the first half to give Thiel a brief 5-4 lead. Wightman scored the equalizer at the 4:24 mark and the go-ahead goal on a pass from Alex Geraci (Garrettsville, Ohio/Crestwood) with 2:25 remaining before halftime.

However, Washington & Jefferson held a 1-goal lead (6-5) at the break after Sofia Jenkins scored at the 2:13 mark and Clara Sherwood scored with just seven seconds remaining.

The Presidents increased their lead to 7-5 When Amanda Effland scored 41 seconds into the second half.

Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Western) and Mackenzie Quinn (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) notched back-to-back unassisted markers at 15:19 and 11:51, respectively, to force a 7-7 tie.

The Presidents earned the win with three straight goals from 9:36 to 6:56, two of which were scored by Sadie Firman. Sarah Labovitz scored what would eventually count as the game-winner.

Quinn and Johnson each scored unassisted goals with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, but the Tomcats were unable to score the game-tying goal down the stretch.

Wightman and Quinn led the Tomcats with hat tricks. Johnson contributed a pair of goals and an assist while Juanima Van Zandt (Baltimore, Md./Edmonson West) scored one goal.

Aisa Uhler led W&J with five points (2G, 3A) while Effland registered four points (2G, 2A).

Emily Ramous (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) made seven saves for the Tomcats. Katilyn Brown made 14 saves for the Presidents.

The Tomcats (5-2, 3-2 PAC) will face the Saint Vincent Bearcats on the road Saturday. The PAC game will begin at 3 p.m.
