GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against the Franciscan Lady Barons Wednesday at Tomcat Park. The Tomcats earned their first win of the season, 2-1, in the first game. Franciscan went on to win in nine innings, 1-0, in the second game.
Thiel scored both of its runs in the first game during the second inning. With two outs, two Tomcats reached base on a pair of errors by the Lady Barons.
Melina Bufalini (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) went on to score both baserunners when she smashed a double to left center.
Jenny Massey cut the lead in half in the third on an RBI-triple to right field, but the Tomcats refused to give up another run the rest of the way to preserve the win.
Riley Ladd (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) went 3-for-3 in Game 1. Bufalini had the key hit, a 2-RBI double to left center field. Massey went 2-for-4 with an RBI-triple.
Kayla Roddy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win. She allowed one run on eight hits. Roddy struck out nine batters and allowed four walks.
Franciscan scored the lone run of the second game in the ninth inning. Rachel Cooper hit a one-out double down the left field line, and the next batter, Andi Queen, followed with an RBI-single to right field.
Lauren Durboraw (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) went 3-for-4 with a double in the second game.
Lilly Wahl earned the win in the second game. She allowed nine hits without giving up a run. Wahl struck out six and issued one walk.
Ashtin Kirkwood (Elderton, Pa./West Shamokin) tossed a five-hitter for the Tomcats.
The Tomcats will play the Chatham Cougars on the road Saturday. The first game of the PAC doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
