Tomcats win in extras, split doubleheader versus Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Thiel College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with the Franciscan Barons, with Franciscan winning game one, 9-1, and Thiel winning game two, 12-8 (11 innings).
 
In game one, Franciscan had a 1-0 lead entering the fourth inning, when they added onto the lead the next three innings, leading 6-0 after five innings and 9-1 after six innings, which would end up as the final score.
 
The Tomcats were led by two hits from Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley). Anthony Sebastian (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) knocked in the only run for Thiel. Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) notched the only extra-base hit (a double). Sante Carducci (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) was charged with a loss, throwing 4.1 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
 
For the Barons, Chris Furka and Brendan Burke homered. Declan Peterson totaled three runs and two RBIs. Jacob Watson was the winning pitcher, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out four in six innings.
 
In game two, the teams were back and forth, with Thiel tying the game at 8-8 in the eighth inning. The Tomcats broke the game open with a four-run 11th inning on RBIs by Williams, Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), and Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren) (two). Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) slammed the door shut in the bottom of the 11th for a 12-8 Tomcats' win.
 
In game two, Johnson stayed hot, reaching base in all seven plate appearances with five hits, a walk, and an intentional walk. Johnson also tallied two doubles, three runs, and two RBIs. Williams hit two more doubles and recorded two runs and three RBIs. Andrew Giesey (Penn, Pa./Penn Trafford) scored three runs on two hits and two walks. Rago totaled three hits with three RBIs and a run. Katon earned the win, hurling 4.2 innings, giving up no runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out three.
 
For the Barons, Joshua Costello hit two home runs and knocked in four runs. Kyle Ferrance finished with four hits. Patrick Wallace was charged with the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) in 1.2 innings.
 
The Tomcats and Barons will face in a nine-inning series finale on Monday (previously scheduled for Sunday) at 4 p.m.
