NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College women's basketball team lost its season opener Wednesday to the Westminster Titans, 66-58.
The Tomcats trailed by three points (29-26) at halftime, but went on to lead by four points (38-34) with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter after
Nielah Jones (Baltimore, Md./Catholic) made a three-pointer. The Titans led by a point (51-50) to start the final quarter when Katie Fitzpatrick closed out scored in the third frame on a layup.
The Tomcats held the lead twice in the fourth quarter, but the Titans went on a 11-2 run over the final five minutes to claim the win.
Colleen Trainer (Latrobe, Pa./Mount Pleasant) led the Tomcats with 15 points while
Rachel Breckenridge (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire) scored 12 points.
Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Western) recorded a game-best 10 rebounds while scoring seven points. Jones chipped in with eight points.
Megan Meyer and Natalie Murrio led the Titans with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
The Tomcats will return to action Friday when they host the Washington & Jefferson Presidents at Beeghly Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
