GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's basketball team was defeated, 71-61, by the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys in a non-conference game Wednesday evening.
The Pomeroys went on an 8-2 run to begin the game, but the Tomcats answered with a seven-point run to take a 9-8 lead. The Pomeroys closed the quarter with a 6-2 run to take a 14-11 lead to start the second quarter. The Tomcats kept pace in the second quarter, with the Pomeroys ahead at halftime by just five (31-26).
In the second half, the Pomeroys began pulling ahead, leading by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, and closed out the quarter leading 49-39. The fourth quarter began as more of the same, with the Pomeroys leading by 12 (59-47) with just under six minute to play. However, the Tomcats would not go down quietly, as they put together a 12-2 run to cut the Pomeroys lead to just two with around 2:30 to play. The Pomeroys closed out the game with a 10-2 run of their own to win 71-61.
For the Tomcats,
Rachel Breckenridge (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire) tallied a career-high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including a perfect 4-for-4 on three-pointers and 6-for-6 on free throws.
Emily Harriman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) led the team with five assists and tallied 11 points.
Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Western) led the team with six rebounds and scored seven points with a block and a steal.
Taylor Susany (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) tallied 9 points on 3-of-6 shooting and added three assists.
For the Pomeroys, Sydney Ingram led the game with 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Allyson Hardiek scored 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting with 10 rebounds and two blocks.
The Tomcats will look to bounce back when they open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play at Chatham on Tuesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
