LEESBURG, Fla. – The Thiel College softball team concluded play in The Spring Games Saturday in Leesburg, Fla. with a pair of one-run losses to the Marian Sabres (5-4) and the RPI Engineers (4-3).
Marian scored four runs in the second inning on a pair of home runs. Thiel cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth when
Chase Gifford (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) hit a two-run bomb over the center field fence. It was her second homer during play in The Spring Games.
With two outs in the sixth inning,
Casey Buechel (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) made it a one-run game when she recorded an infield hit that scored
Ali Arter (Johnstown, Ohio/Johnstown-Monroe).
Kara Baumgardner (Summerhill, Pa./Forest Hills) tied up the game for the Tomcats when she hit a single to right field, scoring
Lauren Durboraw (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) from third.
The Sabres scored what turned out to be the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth on a double steal. The Tomcats were retired in order in the top of the seventh.
Gifford led the Tomcats at the plate with two hits, one of which was a two-run homer. Buechel went 2-for-2. Marian's Melanie Weigel recorded two hits, including a three-run home run in the second inning.
Lindsey Durboraw (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) absorbed the loss. She allowed one run on two hits in three innings of work. Paige Rauhut picked up the win. She struck out nine batters and allowed three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) staked the Tomcats to a 3-0 lead when she blasted a three-run homer in the first inning against the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineers. It was Falce's second home run of the season. However, the Engineers went on to score two runs in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth to steal the win.
Bailey Hoover (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) went 2-for-3 against RPI with a run scored.
Grace Taylor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) allowed two runs on one hit through three innings while
Lindsey Durboraw (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) also allowed two earned runs on three hits in two innings.
Thiel is scheduled to play John Carroll on Friday, March 20. The first game of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
