Marietta edges Thiel, 10-9

O’Connor sets new program career record for saves

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Thiel College men's lacrosse team was edged 10-9 in a non-conference game on the road Wednesday by the Marietta Pioneers.
 
Marietta opened a 3-0 early lead, but Thiel scored three consecutive goals late in the second quarter to trail by just one goal (6-5) at halftime. Selom Kalin-Samlan (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill), Nick Sylvis (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and Andrew Monks (Butler, Pa./Butler) each scored a goal for the Tomcats during the stretch while Dylan Waskiewicz (York, Pa./Red Lion) recorded assists on two of the goals.
 
The Tomcats trailed 9-6 midway through the third quarter but went on to score three straight goals for the second time in the contest to force a 9-9 tie early in the fourth quarter. Waskiewicz scored with 6:07 remaining in the third while Sylvis netted an up-goal with less than a minute remaining in the third. Waskiewicz scored his second goal of the game, this time on a man-advantage, early in the fourth quarter on a pass from Jeffrey Karnoff (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) to force a 9-9 tie.
 
Connor Ficke scored what counted as the game-winner for the Pioneers on a pass from Nathan Ketner with a little more than nine minutes remaining in regulation.
 
Waskiewicz led Thiel with four points (2G, 2A) while Sylvis scored three goals.
 
Quinn Rundgren scored a game-high four goals for Marietta. Ficke scored three goals, including the game-winner.
 
Cole O'Connor (Midlothian, Va./James River) made 14 saves for the Tomcats to become the program leader (547) in the category. Dane Barker made nine saves for Marietta.
 
Thiel (2-3) will take on the Medaille Mavericks on Saturday. The non-conference game will begin at noon.
