GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's soccer team won a 2-1 non-conference game over the Defiance Yellow Jackets on Monday.
Thiel got on the board first after
Arlene Barreto (Covina, Calif./Bishop Amat Memorial ) found
Hannah Strott (Mogadore, Ohio/Field) on the end of a perfectly placed through ball past the Defiance defense. Strott slipped the ball past the Yellow Jackets goalkeeper giving the Tomcats the 1-0 lead in the 17
th minute.
10 minutes later, Thiel would double their lead when Strott won the end line and crossed the ball over to a wide open
Nicole Pereksta (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge) who found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
With less than eight minutes left in regulation, Jordan Furko found the ball on a failed Thiel clearance. Furko would pass the ball up to Blake Newman who shot it into the back of the net cutting the deficit down to 2-1.
A one-goal deficit would be as close to the lead as the Yellow Jackets would get as the Tomcat defense held strong in the final minutes of the game.
Defensively, Thiel's back line only allowed five shots on goal all night.
Bethany Bonnar (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) tallied four saves in during her time in net.
The Tomcats are back in action on Saturday when they travel to the Geneva Golden Tornadoes for a Presidents' Athletic Conference contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
