GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats lost a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game to the Case Western Reserve Spartans Saturday night at Alumni Stadium, 37-6.
Case Western Reserve scored on its first drive of the game on a Zach Hall run from 12 yards out. Hall, who carried five times on the drive, capped off a 10-play effort in 4:48 with his 12-yard touchdown run. Hall led the Spartans on the ground with 78 yards on 11 carries.
The Spartans, who received 75 votes in the most recent D3football.com Top 25 poll, scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Both scores were on passes from Drew Saxton to Colt Morgan. The first touchdown catch was from two yards out while the second touchdown pass was a 23-yarder.
Saxton tossed his third and final touchdown pass of the game near the midpoint of the third quarter when he connected with Brett Carney from nine yards out to give the Spartans a 28-0 lead.
Thiel responded with a touchdown on its next drive.
Marko Bakovic (Stockholm, N.J./Wallkill Valley) completed four passes on the drive, including a 24-yard touchdown lob to freshman wide receiver
Caleb Shuler (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton). Bakovic also found
Yoseph Bekele (Silver Springs, Md./Paint Branch) for a 24-yard gain,
Donny Pattison (Bradford, Pa./Bradford Area) for 17 yards and
Isaiah Harvin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) for nine yards on the drive.
Shuler caught five passes for 82 yards Saturday. He has two touchdown catches on the season. Bakovic completed 12-of-26 passes for 181 yards against the Spartans.
Saxton completed 23-of-42 passes for 270 yards. He threw three touchdown passes and two interceptions. Morgan caught nine passes for 116 yards and a pair of scores.
Darien Mosley (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts) led Thiel on defense with 10 tackles, an interception and a pass breakup.
Trou Johnson (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) made nine tackles and broke up one pass.
Cameron Prebble (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) made eight tackles, picked off a pass and broke up a pass.
Andrew Plowden (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills Charter), who made four tackles on the night, recorded one sack for a loss of 13 yards.
Case Western Reserve recorded 10 sacks on the night. Cameron Brown, who tallied four sacks, made eight total tackles. He also forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Luke Bedell recorded both of Case Western Reserve's interceptions.
The Tomcats will face the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets on the road next Saturday. Kickoff for the PAC game is at 1:30 p.m.
