Barreto, Strott boost Tomcats past Hawks

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 non-conference victory at home over the Hilbert Hawks on Thursday.

After a scoreless opening 15 minutes of play, Thiel would be awarded a free kick on the far side of the field just outside of the penalty box. Emma Polinski (Brunswick, Ohio/Trinity) would find the head of Arlene Barreto (Covina, Calif./Bishop Amat Memorial ) who put the ball into the right side of the net for her first collegiate goal.

10 minutes later, Polinski would play a through ball up to Hannah Strott (Mogadore, Ohio/Field) who would slip it just past the keeper giving Thiel the 2-0 lead in the 25th minute. This was also Strott's first goal in a Tomcat uniform.

Two minutes later, after a failed defensive clearance, Barreto would steal the ball away from the Hawks and put it in the back of the net to increase Thiel's lead to 3-0 heading into the halftime break.

In the 54th minute, Mackenzie Quinn (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) would take a chance from long range and curled her shot over the keeper's head to push Thiel's lead to 4-0.   In the 69th minute, Marissa Ramirez (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) would find Barreto who would score her third goal of the game, giving Thiel the 5-0 advantage. Ramirez would get in on the action, adding a goal of her own in the 75th minute after receiving a pass from Strott.

Defensively, Bethany Bonnar (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) and Shay Tresler (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) split time in net, combining for five saves to keep the shut out and the win in tact.

The Tomcats are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 25th when they hit the road to take on the Marietta Pioneers. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
