LATROBE, Pa. – The Saint Vincent Bearcats won three games Friday during play in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament, including two in the title round against the Thiel Tomcats, to win the league title.
The Bearcats defeated the Westminster Titans Friday morning (4-0) to reach the title round against the Tomcats. Saint Vincent plated three first-inning runs against the Tomcats in Game G of the tournament. The score remained 3-0 until the Bearcats added four more runs over the fifth and sixth innings to earn the win, 7-0.
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) went 2-for-3 with a double in Game G.
Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk) also went 2-for-3 while
Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) doubled.
Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) absorbed the loss, her first of the tournament.
Saint Vincent's win in Game G forced a winner-take-all, if-necessary game. Thiel got off to a great start in the decisive game by scoring a pair of runs in their first at-bat.
Bailey Hoover (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) drove in a run on a single through the left side while Falce, who doubled to center field, scored on a passed ball.
Saint Vincent scored three runs in the second inning, but Thiel reclaimed the lead (4-3) in the top of the fourth.
Allyssa Kidwell (Fort Mohave, Ariz./Mohave Accelerated) and Woytek had the key hits in the fourth. Kidwell drove in a run on a double to left center field. Woytek drove in the go-ahead run on a single down the left field line.
The Bearcats answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead, which they would not give up the rest of the way en route to claiming their second PAC title in program history.
Falce went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored in the if-necessary game. Woytek went 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Fullmer tripled and scored a run.
Fullmer took the loss. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits in four innings.
The Tomcats reached the title round after defeating Westminster (2-1) and Saint Vincent (3-0) on Thursday.
Falce, Kelley and Woytek were named to the All-Tournament Team on Friday. Falce went 5-for-13 (.385) in the tournament with three doubles and one RBI.
Woytek went 4-for-13 (.308) in the tournament with three runs scored, two RBIs and a double. Kelley willed the Tomcats into the title round with wins against Westminster and Saint Vincent on Thursday. She allowed one earned run in those two games in 14 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
