GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team defeated Penn State Behrend in five sets Tuesday night at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Thiel took the match in five sets after dropping the first set, 25-21.
The Tomcats bounced back to take set number two 25-20 before falling in the third set 26-24.
Thiel stormed back to take the final two sets (25-23 and 15-7) to win the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) contest 3-2. It was Thiel's first win over Penn State Behrend since Feb. 19, 2015.
Chance Hoffman (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) collected game-highs in both kills (18) and blocks (6) in the five-set win, while
Ryan Sumarsono (Victor, N.Y./Victor) added 24 digs and
Stephen Borgen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) totaled 50 assists.
Thiel finished the regular season 15-12 overall and 10-4 in AMCC play.
With Tuesday's win the Tomcats earned the third seed in this weekend's AMCC Championship Tournament. Thiel will face the second-seeded Geneva Golden Tornadoes in the tournament semifinals Friday at 8:30 p.m.
The Tomcats went 1-1 against the Golden Tornadoes in the regular season. Thiel defeated Geneva 3-1 on March 2 but suffered a 3-1 loss on April 6.
The conference championship tournament will be hosted by top-seeded Wittenberg at Springfield High School. Wittenberg will take on fourth-seeded Penn State Behrend in the semifinals Friday at 6 p.m.
The championship match will be played Saturday at 3 p.m.
