Tomcats sweep Titans

Thiel scatters 30 hits in PAC twinbill

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats swept the Westminster Titans in their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener Tuesday at Tomcat Park. Thiel won the first game 10-2 and the second game 3-0.

The sweep was Thiel's first over Westminster since 2008.

Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) got the Tomcats on the scoreboard when she singled up the middle in the first inning, allowing Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk) to score.

The Titans got that run back in the second inning, but the Tomcats plated four runs in the fourth inning to take control of the game. Allyssa Kidwell (Fort Mohave, Ariz./Mohave Accelerated) had the key hit in the fourth, a 2-out single to left that scored two runs. Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) and Falce also brought in one run apiece on singles in the fourth.

Thiel added five more runs over the final three innings while limiting Westminster to one more run.

Woytek, Falce and Kidwell each recorded three hits in the first game. Kelley hit one triple while Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) notched a pair of doubles. Woytek and Falce also recorded one double apiece.

Kelley earned the win in the first game. She allowed two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.

Fullmer tossed a shutout in the second game. She allowed eight hits, issued three walks and struck out one batter.

The Tomcats scored the only run they would need in the second inning of the second game when Woytek hit a 2-out single to center field, which scored Chase Gifford (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School).

Kelley drove in Thiel's second run of the game in the sixth inning on a 2-out hit to third base. Gifford gave the Tomcats an insurance run in the seventh when she smashed a 2-out double to left center field, which scored Kidwell from first base.

Woytek, Kelley and Gifford each tallied three hits in the second game. Gifford notched Thiel's only extra-base hit, an RBI-double in the seventh inning.

Thiel (7-13, 2-0 PAC) will host the Bethany Bison (2-10, 0-2 PAC) Wednesday at Tomcat Park. The first game of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
