KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Thiel College softball team concluded play in The Spring Games Friday with an 11-2 win over the Penn State New Kensington Lions and a 3-1 loss in eight innings to the Bridgewater Eagles at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, Fla.
Thiel plated five runs in the first inning against PSU New Kensington and cruised to an 11-2 win in five innings.
Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk),
Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) and
Chase Gifford (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) each finished with two hits. Woytek,
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport),
Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) and
Quinn Ursprung (Bel Air, Md./C Milton Wright) each hit one double in the win. Falce drove in four runs while Ursprung recorded two RBIs. Woytek also stole four bases to set a new program single-game best in the category.
Fullmer earned the win. She allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on three hits.
Ashtin Kirkwood (Elderton, Pa./West Shamokin) threw the fifth inning in non-save situation. She allowed one hit in the inning without allowing a run and struck out one batter.
In the second game of the day, Bridgewater broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning on an error. Thiel tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh after Woytek drew a 2-out walk and advanced to second base on Kelley's infield hit. Woytek scored the game-tying run on Falce's single to left field.
The Eagles went on to score a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and refused to give up a hit to Thiel in the bottom of the inning to earn the win, 3-1.
Ursprung led the Tomcats with a pair of singles against the Eagles.
Kelley absorbed the loss. She allowed three runs, one of which was earned, on four hits. She struck out two batters and issued two walks.
The Tomcats are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, March 14 on the road against the Hiram Terriers. The first game of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
