GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's lacrosse team improved to 3-2 on the season Wednesday after earning an 18-9 non-conference win over the Wilmington Quakers at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
Thiel led 9-5 at halftime and opened the third quarter with five consecutive goals to hold a commanding 14-5 lead. Four of Thiel's goals at the beginning of the third quarter were during man-up chances.
John Smiley (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) led the Tomcats with six goals and added two assists for an eight-point game.
Dylan Waskiewicz (York, Pa./Red Lion) recorded six points with five goals and an assist.
Jeffrey Karnoff (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central) (3G, 3A) and
Desmond Stuart (Roanoke, Va./Salem) (1G, 5A) also tallied six points apiece while
Kenny Hill (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) recorded three points (1G, 2A).
Thiel's
Jack Fontana (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted) won 28-of-31 faceoffs and collected 23 ground balls.
Andrew Miller (Macedon, N.Y./Penfield), who recorded two points (1G, 1A), caused four turnovers and picked up five ground balls.
Zac Chucta and Connor Judge paced Wilmington with three goals apiece.
Cole O'Connor (Midlothian, Va./James River) made two saves and earned the win for the Tomcats.
Michael Purnell (Tipp City, Ohio/Bethel) made eight saves in 45 minutes of work. Reed Beavers made six saves for the Quakers.
The Tomcats (3-2) will take on the Houghton Highlanders (0-3) on the road Saturday. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
