GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's basketball team lost a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game to the Chatham Cougars Wednesday at Beeghly Gymnasium, 66-63.
The Tomcats led 17-13 after one quarter, but the Cougars flipped the score in the second quarter to force a 30-30 tie at halftime.
Tied 38-38 with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter, the Tomcats closed the frame on a 14-4 run to take a 52-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
Alivia Sidley (Thompson, Ohio/Ledgemont),
Rachel Breckenridge (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire) and
Abby Triskett (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) each hit a 3-pointer for the Tomcats during the run.
Thiel went on to lead by 15 points early in the fourth quarter on a
Jess Vormelker (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) trey, but the Cougars used an 11-0 run to get back into the game, trailing by just four points (61-57) with four minutes remaining in regulation.
Megan Sieg tied up the game (63-63) for the Cougars on a layup with 35 seconds remaining and scored the game-winner on another layup with 12 seconds left. Katie Sieg made a free throw with a little more than a second left in the game, and the Cougars escaped with the comeback conference win.
Vormelker scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to secure her seventh double-double of the season. Sidley scored 16 points while
Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Western) recorded a game-best 18 rebounds, tying her for the fifth most in a single game in program history.
Katie Sieg led Chatham with 21 points while Megan Sieg scored 19 points and came up with nine rebounds. Ashley Mcclain also chipped in with 13 points.
Thiel will host the Grove City Wolverines Saturday at Beeghly Gymnasium. The PAC game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
