Vormelker leads Thiel past Bethany with season-high 32 points

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Jess Vormelker (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) scored 32 points to lead the Thiel College women's basketball team to its second straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win with a 77-69 victory over the Bethany Bison Monday at Beeghly Gymnasium.

Bethany held a 19-14 lead over Thiel after one quarter of play and led 31-24 with 2:18 remaining before halftime. However, the Tomcats closed out the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 32-31 lead at halftime. Freshman guard Rachel Breckenridge (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire) scored Thiel's last five points in the first half on a 3-pointer with 34 seconds remaining and on a long jumper just before the buzzer.

The Bison edged the Tomcats 19-18 in the third quarter but Vormelker's 3-pointer at the buzzer tied up the game (50-50) heading into the fourth.

The Tomcats, who opened the final frame on a 7-0 run, never trailed in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 13 points down the stretch.

Vormelker scored a game-best and season-high 32 points while also recording five rebounds, five assists, three steals and a pair of blocks. She made 11 shots on the night, including three from beyond the 3-point line, and went 7-for-7 at the charity stripe.
