Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ed Topoleski

Vormelker scores 31 points in loss to Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Jess Vormelker (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) scored a game-high 31 points Wednesday but it wasn't enough for the Thiel College women's basketball team in an 80-72 Presidents' Athletic Conference loss on the road to the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets.

The Tomcats got behind early and trailed 25-16 after one quarter and 46-34 at halftime. In the third, however, the Tomcats used a 20-8 run to tie up the game (54-54). Vormelker scored the game-tying bucket with 3:26 remaining in the third and added the and-one to give the Tomcats the lead (55-54).

Vormelker went on to give her team its largest lead of the game (57-54) on a layup with 1:48 left in the third frame, but the Yellow Jackets opened the fourth quarter on a 15-2 run en route to the conference win.

Vormelker made 11-of-20 shots from the floor on the night and went 6-of-6 from the line. She grabbed five rebounds while recording a pair of assists and blocks. Her 31 points Wednesday were the second most she scored in a game this season. She scored 32 points in a win against Bethany on Feb. 4.

Thiel freshman forward Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Western) scored 11 points while recording four rebounds and four steals. Danyelle Lucido (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) also scored 11 points while Alivia Sidley (Thompson, Ohio/Ledgemont) scored seven points.

Andrea Orlosky and Monica Starre both recorded double-doubles for the Yellow Jackets. Orlosky led Waynesburg with 17 points while grabbing 11 rebounds. Starre led Waynesburg with 15 rebounds and also scored 12 points. Brooke Fuller scored 16 points and corralled nine rebounds.

The Tomcats will close out the regular season Saturday when they face the Geneva Golden Tornadoes on the road. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
