PITTSBURGH – The Thiel Tomcats lost a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game to the Carnegie Mellon Tartans Saturday at Gesling Stadium, 40-7.
Carnegie Mellon led 10-0 after one quarter and 30-0 at halftime. The Tartans added 10 more points in the third frame.
Thiel's touchdown came 45 seconds into the fourth quarter on a 10-yard pass from
Marko Bakovic (Stockholm, N.J./Wallkill Valley) to
Damian Southwick (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell), which capped off a 10-play drive that covered 69 yards in 5:08.
Chris Rosales (Port St. Lucie, Fla./St. Lucie West Centennial) added the extra point.
Brandon Nguyen staked CMU to a 3-0 lead with 7:47 remaining in the first quarter on a 31-yard field goal. A little less than seven minutes later, Chris Haas scored on a two-yard run to make it 10-0.
Quarterback JD Dayhuff increased CMU's lead to 17-0 early in the second quarter on a one-yard run. Dayhuff went on to throw touchdown passes of 25 and 41 yards to Alex Oshita before halftime to give the Tartans a 30-0 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, Luke Bikulege scored on a four-yard run while Zach Shirk made a 38-yard field goal to close out scoring for the Tartans.
Bakovic completed 18-of-34 passes for 149 yards.
Marlon Brown (White Plains, Md./St. Charles) caught five passes for 52 yards while
Corlin Armour-Smith (Canton, Ohio/Central Catholic) caught four passes for 42 yards. Southwick caught five passes, one of which was a touchdown reception, for 39 yards.
Dayhuff completed 13-of-18 passes for 225 yards. He threw two touchdown passes and one interception. Oshita led the Tartans with four catches, two of which were touchdowns, for 88 yards.
Matt Crawford (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) made 14 tackles for Thiel. He recorded one sack and one tackle for a loss of yards.
Eligah Flynn (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) made 11 tackles and intercepted a pass while
Darien Mosley (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts) made 10 tackles, broke up two passes and forced a fumble.
Michael Lohmeier led Carnegie Mellon on defense with 10 tackles and three sacks.
The Tomcats will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 9 when they face the Bethany Bison on the road. The PAC game is scheduled to begin at 1:25 p.m.
