NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College women's basketball team lost a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest on the road Wednesday to the Westminster Titans, 57-55.
Thiel held a 9-point lead at halftime (20-11) and a 12-point lead (27-15) near the midpoint of the third quarter after
Jess Vormelker (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) drained a 3-pointer. The Titans finished the third quarter on a 17-10 run to close the gap to five points (37-32) heading into the fourth frame.
In the fourth, the Titans evened the score (44-44) with 5:42 remaining on a Kayla Bennett free throw. Westminster went on to hold a 9-point lead (55-46) with 40 seconds left in regulation.
Rachel Breckenridge (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire),
Abby Triskett (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) and Vormelker each made a 3-pointer for the down the stretch, but the Tomcats ran out of time and never got off a potential game-tying shot.
Vormelker led the Tomcats with 17 points and 13 rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the season.
Alivia Sidley (Thompson, Ohio/Ledgemont) also scored 17 points and corralled five rebounds. Breckenridge scored nine points off the bench, all on 3-pointers. Triskett scored six points on a pair of threes.
Bennett led the Titans with 17 points and also contributed seven rebounds. Jackie Mathews scored 12 points while Magen Polczynski and Emily Fromknecht each came up with 10 rebounds.
The Tomcats will host the Saint Vincent Bearcats Saturday at Beeghly Gymnasium. The PAC game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
