OBERLIN, Ohio – The Thiel College women's basketball team lost a non-conference game on the road in overtime Friday to the Oberlin Yeowomen, 72-65.
Thiel won the first quarter 19-14 and held a 33-29 lead at halftime. The Yeowomen outscored Thiel 9-8 in the third quarter.
Maggie Gross tied up the game for Oberlin (44-44) with 6:07 left in the fourth quarter. The Tomcats held 3-point leads twice down the stretch – on a jumper in the paint by
Jess Vormelker (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) with 2:21 remaining and after
Alivia Sidley (Thompson, Ohio/Ledgemont) made a pair of freebies with 26 seconds to play – but Leah Ross sent the game to overtime when she drained a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining in regulation.
Oberlin outscored Thiel 10-2 over the first 3:07 of overtime and never looked back in securing the non-conference win.
Vormelker and freshman forward
Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Western) both recorded double-doubles for the Tomcats in the loss. Vormelker scored 20 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out six assists. Johnson, who has 13 double-doubles on the season, scored 16 points and corralled 14 rebounds while also coming up with five steals.
Sidley scored 14 points for the Tomcats while notching five assists and four rebounds.
Rachel Breckenridge (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire), a freshman guard, came off the bench to contribute eight points.
Gross led the Yeowomen with 20 points and 18 rebounds. Alexandra Stipano and Cheyenne Arthur scored 18 and 12 points, respectively.
The Tomcats will take on the Westminster Titans on the road Wednesday. The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
