GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Thiel College women's basketball team lost a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game on the road Wednesday to the Grove City Wolverines, 72-62.
The Tomcats trailed 39-36 at halftime but took a 56-51 lead into the fourth quarter after outscoring the Wolverines 20-12 in the third frame. The Tomcats took the lead thanks to a 15-6 third-quarter run that included a trio of treys by
Alivia Sidley (Thompson, Ohio/Ledgemont),
Rachel Breckenridge (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire) and
Jess Vormelker (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley).
It took the Wolverines less than four minutes of the fourth quarter clock to tie up the contest (58-58), and they went ahead for good with 3:20 remaining in regulation. Grove City went a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch.
Vormelker scored a game-high 17 points for the Tomcats while also recording six rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocks. Vormelker's 17 points were enough to move her into a tie for third on the program's career points list with Kelly Barzak (1,401).
Breckenridge, a freshman guard, came off the bench to score 15 for Thiel. She made 5-of-8 shots on the night, all from 3-point range. Sidley, a senior guard, contributed 12 points while freshman forward
Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Western), who was named the PAC Rookie of the Week Monday, picked up her 10
th double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Kate Balcom led Grove City with 16 points while McKenzie Black scored 14 points. Laura Buchanan corralled a game-best 13 rebounds while Sedona Campbell recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Thiel will host the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets Saturday at Beeghly Gymnasium. The PAC game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
