Thiel falls to ONU, WPI

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Thiel College softball team lost to Ohio Northern and Worcester Polytechnic Institute Monday during play in the Sunkissed Games. Thiel lost to Ohio Northern 7-1 before falling to WPI 7-2.
 
Ohio Northern led 4-0 after three innings. Thiel scored a run in the top of the fourth when Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) pushed Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk) across the plate on a single to right field.
 
The Polar Bears answered with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back in the 7-1 win.
 
Falce led the Tomcats in the first game with an RBI-single.
 
Kirsten Lightel earned the win. She struck out 10 batters and allowed one earned run on four hits. Gabby Stewart led Ohio Northern with four RBIs on two hits.
 
In the second game, WPI plated three runs in the top of the third. Thiel got two of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning, the second of which was scored on a sacrifice fly by Falce.
 
The fourth and fifth innings were scoreless, but WPI scored four more runs over the final two frames to earn the win.
 
Nina Murphy-Cook led the Engineers with three hits while Ama Biney recorded a pair of RBIs. Miranda Reesman (Vandergrift, Pa./Leechburg) paced the Tomcats with two hits.
 
The Tomcats will continue play in the Sunkissed Games Tuesday. Thiel is scheduled to play Bluffton at 11:15 a.m. and Illinois College at 3:45 p.m.
