BETHANY, W.Va. – The Thiel College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on the road Saturday against the Bethany Bison. Bethany won the first game 5-1 before the Tomcats earned a 6-2 win in the second game.
In the second contest, the Tomcats broke open a scoreless game in the top of the second when they plated five runs.
Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa./Mohawk) had the key hit in the inning, a 2-RBI triple to right field.
Allyssa Kidwell (Fort Mohave, Ariz./Mohave Accelerated),
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) also drove in one run apiece in the inning.
The Tomcats increased their lead to 6-0 in the fifth when
Jessica Kelley (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) tripled to center field, which allowed
Miranda Reesman (Vandergrift, Pa./Leechburg) to score.
The Bison scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but
Shannon Baker (Corry, Pa./Corry) and Thiel's defense kept them off the scoreboard over the last two innings to pick of the league win.
Baker earned the win, her fourth of the season. She allowed one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts.
Corradi and Kelley each collected two hits and drove in a run while Woytek led the Tomcats with two RBIs.
In the first game, Thiel opened scoring in the top of the first when
Bailey Hoover (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) drove a run in on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Bethany got that run back in the bottom of the first to force a 1-1 tie and added four more runs over the next two innings to pick up the win, 5-1.
Corradi led the Tomcats with two hits in the first game. Kelley took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
The Tomcats (6-12, 1-1 PAC) will host the Westminster Titans Wednesday at Tomcat Park. The first game of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
