GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's lacrosse team opened the 2018 season Monday with a 19-13 non-conference loss to the Hiram Terriers at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
The Terriers opened up a 4-1 lead but the Tomcats got within a goal (6-5) near the midpoint of the first half on a pair of goals by
Paige Scherer (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley) and one goal apiece by
Emily Ramous (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and
Bradleigh Williams (Lusby, Md./Patuxent).
Hiram went on to take a 12-6 lead after scoring six straight goals over an 8-minute period, which ultimately turned out to be the difference in the non-conference tilt.
Scherer led the Tomcats with six goals while
Mackenzie Quinn (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) scored four goals. Scherer also controlled nine draws, scooped up three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
Sierah Ray led Hiram with seven points on five goals and two assists. Katelyn Slomovitz scored five goals while Alyse Gillentine scored four goals and picked up one assist.
Kyra Farrell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) made seven saves for the Tomcats. Rachel Metcalf and Gillian McMaster combined to make 15 saves for the Terriers.
The Tomcats will return to action Tuesday when they host the Franciscan Barons at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
