Titans top Tomcats in double overtime

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's basketball team lost its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener in double overtime Saturday to the Westminster Titans, 83-71.
 
The Tomcats led 29-23 at halftime. Both teams scored 22 points in the third quarter, but the Titans were able to tie up the contest in the fourth and held a 1-point lead late. Jess Vormelker (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) made 1-of-2 shots from the free throw line with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
 
The Tomcats controlled the first overtime session and held a 3-point lead with 19 seconds remaining after Vormelker made a pair of freebies, but Alazia Greaves made a 3-pointer for the Titans on the last possession of overtime to force a second extra session.
 
Westminster went on to outscore Thiel 16-4 in the second overtime to secure the conference win.
 
Vormelker recorded her second double-double of the season with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Alivia Sidley (Thompson, Ohio/Ledgemont) also tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Colleen Trainer (Latrobe, Pa./Mount Pleasant) scored 11 points and corralled seven rebounds while Courtney Harriman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) scored nine points.

Kayla Bennett led the Titans with 25 points while securing nine rebounds. Greaves scored 20 points while Emily Fromknecht notched a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jackie Mathews also chipped in with 12 rebounds and five points.
 
The Tomcats will take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats on the road Wednesday. The PAC game will begin at 5:30 p.m.
