GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's soccer team picked up a dramatic Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over Bethany College by a final score of 2-1 in double-overtime Wednesday night at Alumni Stadium.
The Tomcats got on the board in the 21' as a long throw in from
Hunter Young (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) was headed in the back of the net by
Eric Mitchell (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton). Thiel led 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Bison pressured the Tomcats throughout the second half as they collected 10 shots. A Tomcat handball in the box provided the Bison a chance to knot the game up in the 57'. Senior midfielder Jay O'Donnell stepped to the penalty spot and placed a ball just past Tomcat goalkeeper
Christian Conrad (Barberton, Ohio/Central Catholic) to tie the match. Conrad would end the match with a match-high five saves.
Neither team scored for the rest of the second half as the teams headed to overtime. Thiel fended off the Bethany attack in the first overtime period to keep them alive in the match.
Early into the second overtime period
Kohei Hayashi (Hyogo, Japan) played
Zachary Oliver (Bridgeport, Ohio/St. Clairsville) a skipping through ball that Oliver collected and finished in the 101' to give Thiel a 2-1 win in double-overtime.
With the result, Thiel improves to 5-7 and 1-1 in the PAC.
The Tomcats are back in action on Saturday as they host PAC opponent Saint Vincent College at Alumni Stadium, kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
