WOOSTER, Ohio – The Thiel College women's volleyball team won a non-conference match against the College of Wooster in five sets Wednesday night.
Thiel outlasted Wooster 25-18, 18-25, 25-11, 26-28, 15-11 to win the match.
The Tomcats started the first set strong winning by 10 points (25-15) but would drop the second set by a score of 25-18 to make the match tied at one game.
In the third set, Thiel regained the momentum and the game with a convincing 25-11 victory to take a 2-1 set advantage. With a chance to take the match in the fourth, Thiel was able to come back from an early six-point deficit to have the lead 25-24 but eventually fell 28-26.
Freshman setter Olivia Scott (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) led the Tomcats with a team-high 26 assists and tied with senior defensive specialist Megan Sweeny (Freeport, Pa./Freeport Area) for the team-high in digs (21) in the match.
The Tomcats had two hitters with 15 kills or more on the night as junior outside hitter Peyton Allen (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) earned a game-high 21 kills and junior middle hitter Shelby Friedel (Columbia Station, Ohio/Columbia) added 15 kills. Also junior outside hitter Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) collected nine kills and a team-best four blocks.
Thiel improved to 2-3 on the season with the win.
The Tomcats will be back in action Friday when they begin competition in the two-day tournament hosted by Allegheny College. On Friday, Thiel will face Alfred at 5 p.m. and Allegheny at 7:15 p.m.
