Tomcats finish season with win over Scarlet Raiders

Patterson, Rombach break season records

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats concluded their 2017 season Saturday with a 3-2 Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) win over the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders at Beeghly Gymnasium.
 
The Tomcats won the first game 25-23 before falling 25-21. Thiel rebounded with a 25-22 win in the third set before Rutgers-Newark won 25-21 in the fourth set. With the fifth set tied 5-5, the Tomcats rattled off five straight points and held on for a 15-10 win.
 
Mitchell Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led all players with 26 kills Saturday. Cody Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Regan Hess (Burlington, Wis./Wetosha Central) contributed 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Patterson and Hess also combined for eight aces.
 
Also for the Tomcats, Zach Rombach (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tallied a double-double with 55 assists and 12 digs. Thad Paunovich (Avonmore, Pa./Kiski Area) and Nate Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) also contributed 15 and 14 digs, respectively.
 
Cody Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Rombach both set program single-season records Saturday. Patterson tallied 31 aces on the season, surpassing Charlie Tindall's record (29) from 2014. Rombach racked up 962 assists on the season, passing up Corey Hamilton's record (942) from 2012.

Thiel's six seniors – Duane Emanuel (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Hess, Cody Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Paunovich, Roche and Rombach – were honored during Senior Day prior to Saturday's match.
 
The Tomcats finished the 2017 season 11-15 overall and 5-9 in CVC play. Thiel finished the season with three straight wins and won five of their last six matches.
