GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Monday against the Saint Vincent Bearcats. Thiel won the second game 11-4 after falling 6-4 in the first game.
The Bearcats scored three runs in their first at-bat in the second game, but the Tomcats responded with five runs in the bottom of the first.
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch),
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) all had key hits in the inning. Corradi and Falce hit back-to-back RBI-doubles while Fike drove in a pair of runs on a single to center field.
Saint Vincent cut the lead down to a run in the second, but Thiel got that run back in the bottom of the second. The Tomcats went on to score a run in the fourth and two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth.
Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa. /Mohawk) scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, and Corradi pushed two runs across the plate in the fifth on a single to right field. In the sixth,
Mary Kate Dougherty (Depew, N.Y/Mt. St. Mary Academy) scored on a throwing error while
Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Falce went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and one RBI in the second game. Woytek, Corradi,
Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton) and
Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) also recorded two hits apiece.
Emily Duerr paced the Bearcats in the second game with two hits and two RBIs.
In the first game, Saint Vincent broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the second inning. The Tomcats eked out a run in the fourth but the Bearcats extended their lead to 6-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.
Falce drove in a pair of runs on a single to right field in the fifth, and Fike drove in a run in the sixth on a single to center field. Thiel kept Saint Vincent off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh but was unable to get anything going at the plate in the bottom of the seventh.
Falce went 2-for-4 in the first game with two RBIs. Woytek and
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) also collected a pair of hits.
Kelley threw both games for the Tomcats. She allowed two earned runs on nine hits in the first game with three strikeouts. In the second game, Kelley gave up three earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
The Tomcats are scheduled to face the Chatham Cougars on the road Tuesday. The first game of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
