KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Thiel College softball team split a pair of games during the second day of play in the Diamond 9 Citrus Games Monday at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports in Kissimmee, Fla. Thiel beat the Saint Joseph's (Maine) Monks 11-6 after suffering a 14-3 loss to the second-ranked St. John Fisher Cardinals.
Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport),
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) each went 3-for-4 at the dish and scored two runs apiece in Thiel's 11-6 win over Saint Joseph's.
Alana Callahan (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) went 2-for-4 and also scored a pair of runs.
Chase Gifford (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) and Falce each tallied a pair of RBIs in the win.
The Tomcats started the game strong with four runs on three hits in the first inning. Thiel also tallied three-run innings in the second and fourth.
Kelley picked up the win against the Monks, her first of the season. She allowed six runs, four of which were earned, on 10 hits while going the distance. Kate Whitney absorbed the loss after allowing eight runs, four of which were earned, over three stanzas.
Melodie Bailey, Mariah Harrison and Kelsy Gaddy each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Monks. Gaddy and Danielle Pinkham notched two RBIs apiece.
Thiel took an early 1-0 lead against second-ranked St. John Fisher on
Caitlyn Carney (Lake Milton, Ohio/Jackson Milton)'s infield hit, which scored
A.J. Corradi (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch). However, the Cardinals responded with 14 runs over the next four innings.
Thiel also scored two runs in the fifth, one of which was on an RBI-single through the left side of the infield by Corradi.
Corradi and Carney led the Tomcats against the Cardinals with one hit and one RBI apiece.
Mackenzie Gullette (Dunlap, Ill. /Dunlap) took the loss against the Cardinals. She struck out a pair of batters and allowed three walks in three innings. Monica Moses earned the win. She allowed one run on two hits and struck out two batters.
Catcher Mary Claire Grosvenor led St. John Fisher at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance that included three runs scored and two RBIs.
The Tomcats (2-2) will be back in action at the ESPN Wide World of Sports on Tuesday. Thiel will take on Meredith at 11 a.m. and St. John Fisher at 3:30 p.m.
