GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2017 season Wednesday with a 17-11 Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) victory over the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
The Tomcats never trailed in their conference opener and began the game with a 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of goals by
Mackenzie Quinn (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and one marker by
Erica Auberzinski (Odenton, Md./Arundel).
The Yellow Jackets closed the gap to three goals twice in the second half, but
Jennifer Rickens (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) responded with a goal each time. She scored an unassisted goal with 12:23 remaining and went on score on a pass from
Katelyn Labos (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) with 9:13 remaining.
Rickens scored four goals while Auberzinski and Quinn each scored four goals and tallied one assist. Also for the Tomcats, Labos recorded four points (2G, 2A) while
Paige Scherer (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored two goals.
Myesha Fisher (Cleveland, Ohio/John Adams) also scored a goal.
Abbie Miller paced the Yellow Jackets with four goals. Also, Holly Bachman scored three goals and Danielle Beckford scored two goals.
Maya Ballard (Boardman, Ohio/Ursuline) made seven saves to earn her first collegiate win for the Tomcats. Christina Bauer denied 13 shots for the Yellow Jackets.
The Tomcats will return to action Tuesday when they face the Franciscan Barons on the road. The non-conference game is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
