GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel Tomcats lost a pair of non-conference games to the Penn State Behrend Lions Monday at Tomcat Park. Thiel lost the first game 6-5 before falling 10-1 in the second game.
In the first game,
Miranda Reesman (Vandergrift, Pa./Leechburg) evened the score 1-1 in the second inning with a double to right field, but the Tomcats went on to surrender three runs in the fifth.
Reesman drove in two more runs for the Tomcats in the sixth on a 2-RBI triple to right center field, but the Lions picked up two more insurance runs and held a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Vanessa Falce (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) knocked in a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a double to left center. Trailing by just a run the Tomcats had runners on the corners with two outs, but Lions pitcher A.J. Nichols got out of the jam with a popup.
Reesman went 2-for-3 in the first game with three RBIs, a triple and a double. Falce also went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Alexa Fike (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and
Leah Woytek (Hillsville, Pa. /Mohawk) also notched a pair of hits apiece.
Katie Gozzard led the Lions at the plate with a 4-for-4 effort that included three runs scored and two RBIs.
Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) took the loss in the first game. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits while recording three strikeouts. Nichols picked up the win. She allowed five runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts.
In the second game, the Lions scored two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth en route to a 10-1 win.
Falce led the Tomcats at the plate in the second game with a pair of hits, one of which was a double. Kendra Shreck went 3-for-4 for the Lions with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Rachel Miller earned the win in Game 2. She allowed one earned run on four hits with a strikeout.
The Tomcats will host the Allegheny Gators Thursday at Tomcat Park. The first game of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
