MIAMI, Fla. – The Thiel College women's basketball team fell 93-51 to St. Thomas University on Wednesday night at Barry University in the HoopMIA D3 Holiday Shootout in Miami, Fla.
The Tomcats kept pace with the Bobcats in the first quarter only trailing by seven after one.
Thiel converted on back-to-back three pointers from
Jess Vormelker (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) and
Danyelle Lucido (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) to make it a five point game late in the second before Samare Auguste of St. Thomas answered with a three of her own to extend the Bobcat lead to 43-35 going into the half.
Vormelker collected 19 points along with 11 rebounds put the Tomcats within striking distance of the Bobcats going into the break.
The Tomcats were unable to keep the high-powered Bobcat offense in check in the second half as St. Thomas scored 50 points in the second. Auguste led the way for St. Thomas with game-highs in both points (25) and steals (7).
Vormelker ended the game with 23 points and new career-high 20 rebounds, which is the third-most in a single game in Thiel history.
Alivia Sidley (Thompson, Ohio/Ledgemont) was the only other Tomcat in double-figures as she added 11 points on the night.
The Tomcats return to Beeghly Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 3 as they face Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Washington and Jefferson College, tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
