Thiel defeats New Jersey City in opening round of Susquehanna Trailways Tipoff Tournament

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Four Tomcats scored in double figures Saturday to lead the Thiel College women's basketball team to a 66-42 win over the New Jersey City Gothic Knights in the opening round of the Susquehanna Trailways Tipoff Tournament, hosted by Susquehanna University at Houts Gymnasium.
 
It was the first-ever matchup between Thiel and New Jersey City in women's basketball.
 
The Tomcats never trailed in the game and led by as many as 36 points late in the third quarter. Thiel edged New Jersey City in rebounds (45-36), shooting percentage (40.6%-34.0%) and won the battle in the paint (28-14).
 
Jess Vormelker (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley), who tallied her first double-double of the season, led the Tomcats with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Taylor Duchon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
 
Alivia Sidley (Thompson, Ohio/Ledgemont) and Brittany Shumar (Cleveland, Ohio/Villa-Angela St. Joseph) also scored 11 points apiece for the Tomcats.
 
D'Amonte Cancel and Jesenia Montalvo led the Gothic Knights with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Nazjae Imes led her team with seven rebounds.
 
Thiel will face Susquehanna in the tournament championship contest Sunday. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
